Bristol and 3G are having the problem – vodafone is gradually picking up strength and where I thought it was bad when it reverted to 56Kb – my phone (on orange) started losing it’s signal so contacted orange support and they advised to downgrade to 2g – now works – people can actually hear me speaking – usefull feature that for a phone.
So it ends up that my datacard was behaving properly by downgrading to gprs connection – but my phone wasn’t – it tried to hold on to the weakest possible 3G signal even if it meant I couldn’t make any calls. As it is – I’m happy with 2G instead of 3G and I’ll post how much longer the battery lasts – although it won’t be a straight comparison since being able to talk means I’m using it more

Bristol and Vodafone 3G don’t mix very well
Starting to get a connection now – it’s taken three weeks. Basically I use a vodafone datacard to monitor emails and update web sites when I’m at clients offices. At first I could only get a GPRS connection in Bristol (various locations) but I’m finally getting a (extremely flaky) 3G connection occasionally – albeit it drops out quite frequently. Never had this problem either at the office (Llanelli) or my previous clients (Swindon) but the response is bad in Bristol and 57Kb connections are sooo slow after being used to a 3G or 4 Mb broadband connection.

Redesign of Llanelli Sea cadets site
I’ve donea makeover of Llanelli Sea Cadets site, at the moment, it’s not being updated by the cadets and so to make it easier for them to do their own updating, I’ve converted it to a WordPress site, only things I’ve done is added the contact form addin and also transferred the text from their main page onto a new page for the site. Hopefully the cadets will now keep it up to date since the do a lot of events including marshalling at fun runs etc. Best wishes to them for the new site.

Busy purging the links from one of my customers site
Sad really, most of the links were put there at other peoples request, just been through a trawl of the site and most of the link backs don’t exist. Well they are now gone – very easy maintenance anyway, just that License to frill Lingerie Links seem to be getting abused at the moment. Should really do a trawl every month, but might just change to a new link manager contribution. Really should be working on my own site but the client wants a wishlist on their site – so client always wins! Probably won’t be deployed for another week though by the time testing has finished. Still having issues with hits from google, however, at the moment the visitors are going through the roof – even had some from google! Still third ranked of the search engines though and a poor third at that. Now all I need is UK visitors instead of US visitors to go there!

Sorry for the delay in updating the news
Been busy starting work with a new client – all SQL Server 2005 so haven’t had a chance yet to finish the sql tips site or migrate the few remaining customers away from fasthosts. Have to be done soon though, don’t want to waste any more money on the poor service I’ve had from that company
